About the Project
Layered Perspectives is the title of my senior thesis project. The whole purpose of the thesis was to create a series of abstract designs and cut them in layers using the Cricut machine in the TCNJ Makerspace. Once I have all the layers, I simply stack them into a shadowbox to create a three-dimensional effect. I'm essentially blending graphic design and illustration with DIY with this senior thesis.
How they're made
As mentioned before, I used the Cricut machine in the TCNJ Makerspace to cut out the layers, but before I did that, I had to come up with the designs. When coming up with the designs, I sketched them out and put them into Illustrator, where I had to separate each color into its own layer. I accomplished this by using Illustrator tools like the shape builder and pathfinder tool. Once I had the design fully completed, I exported each separate layer as an SVG and uploaded it to the Cricut Design Space.
Once the files were uploaded, it was time for the Cricut machine to do its work. I used colored cardstock paper for the layers, and to achieve depth in the designs I used these little foam adhesive squares that are double-sided, so they can stick in between the layers. I then put the stacked layers into a shadowbox to create the full design.
Showcase
Since this project was my senior thesis, I was able to present my work at the IMM Senior Showcase. The showcase was an opportunity for me to put my work on display for other people to see, and I received positive feedback from the professors, fellow students, and visitors.
